<h4><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">The Path Forward in AD65 — Fatima Iqbal-Zubair is the Working Families Champion We Need</span></h4><p>Recent polling conducted by New River Strategies in California’s 65th Assembly District shows an electorate that has yet to consolidate around a single candidate, with ample opportunity for Fatima Iqbal-Zubair to take either the first or second spot in the general election.</p><p>When we are able to respond to attacks leveled against her, her candidacy is resilient, and we believe she will ultimately succeed in advancing to November.</p><p>After voters hear messages introducing both Davis (using positive language mirroring her own campaign’s communications) and Iqbal-Zubair, Davis has only a modest 3-point increase in vote share, while Iqbal-Zubair’s shoots up by 16 points, leaving both candidates tied at 29% and well ahead of the rest of the pack. Your regular annual taxes are usually paid by your mortgage company through escrow. But after a home purchase, the county also sends a separate supplemental property tax bill — and that one isn’t covered by escrow. It’s the homeowner’s responsibility to pay directly.</p><p>According to the LA County Assessor’s Office, this distinction is a common source of confusion for new homeowners — so much so that the office routinely receives inquiries about it.</p><p>That’s exactly what happened to Fatima and her family.</p><ul><li><p>April 2024: Fatima and her family purchased their current home.</p></li><li><p>Later in 2024: A supplemental tax bill arrived. In their previous home, escrow had always handled property taxes — and their escrow account was already collecting more than enough to cover this bill. Their mortgage company later refunded them the overpayment.</p></li><li><p>When they learned the bill was overdue: Fatima’s husband took time off work and drove to the county office in person. He paid the full $11,107.98 bill, plus the penalty, on the spot.</p></li><li><p>Before leaving: He asked county staff whether the account was fully settled. He was told it was.</p></li><li><p>Recently: They learned a remaining balance was still outstanding. They paid it online the same day.</p></li></ul><p>The account is now fully settled.</p><p>Fatima and her family paid every dollar they owed. They paid the penalty. They paid in person at the county office. The attacks are designed to make a routine homeowner mistake — one the LA County Assessor’s Office acknowledges is common — look like something more. She didn’t realize the form required her to disclose her spouse’s earnings.</p><p>After the incumbent Assemblymember’s attorney filed a complaint, the FPPC contacted her about the omission, and she immediately filed an amendment to correct it.</p><p>The FPPC closed the case with a letter — the agency’s lightest case resolution, with no prosecution and no fine. The FPPC’s own letter documents the reasons for that resolution:</p><ul><li><p>Fatima was a first-time candidate</p></li><li><p>She did not realize her spouse’s income was required to be disclosed</p></li><li><p>She had no prior violations of the Political Reform Act</p></li><li><p>She had timely filed both of her required pre-election campaign statements</p></li><li><p>As soon as she learned of the requirement, she filed an amendment</p></li></ul><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Fatima has filled out her Form 700 correctly in every campaign since.</strong></span></p><p>The attacks try to turn a first-time candidate’s paperwork mistake into a “pattern of dishonesty.” It isn’t one. It was a mistake, she fixed it, and the FPPC’s own letter spells out exactly why they closed the case with a warning rather than a penalty.</p><h4>Fatima and Her Husband Fazlul are immigrants who Fled War and Worked their Way into the Middle Class</h4><p>Fatima and her husband Fazlul live in Harbor Gateway with their family. Fazlul earned his Doctorate in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from UC Irvine and is a Chief Engineer working on satellite and radar systems. In his free time, he mentors a world championship robotics team — passing on his love of science to the next generation of engineers.</p>

As an immigrant, educator, and mother to a son with special needs, Fatima understands first-hand the hardships her neighbors face.</span></h4><h5>She’s running for State Assembly to provide a bold vision that protects and uplifts our communities by&nbsp;tackling the high cost of living, building affordable housing, and responding to our infrastructure needs.</h5><p>Fatima serves as legislative affairs manager and advocate for a nonprofit in Sacramento that focuses on advancing equitable environmental and democracy priorities through our state legislature.&nbsp;She co-chairs an alliance that has brought together both labor and environmental groups for the past year, working closely with labor to support high road and high quality union jobs, while also passing transformative climate policy.</p><p>Fatima has a knack for building coalitions and bringing people together to effect change and make progress on key issues for marginalized communities. She&nbsp;is the chair of the California Democratic Party’s Progressive Caucus, leading the largest state Democratic caucus in the nation. In this role, she has had many achievements, such as co-writing the state's reparations resolution and bringing together delegates of all faiths to pass a ceasefire resolution.</p><p>She leads a youth nonprofit STEAM leader at TeraWatts Initiative, which was founded to ensure equity in education for first-generation black and brown students to have access to STEAM careers. The nonprofit also runs a free annual STEAM summer camp for young children each summer and has formed numerous collaborations with local organizations and community gardens.</p><p>Living in South Los Angeles, Fatima&nbsp;brings with her lived experiences as a former California Teachers Association member and community organizer. Her activism stems from her work as a high school science teacher in Watts at a school that has dealt with the effects of polluted water and land. As an immigrant, educator, and mother to a son with special needs, Fatima understands the challenges our communities face.</span></h4><p>When she was just seven years old, as the Gulf War was beginning, Fatima’s family made the difficult decision to move to a new country and leave everything behind in search of stability and opportunity. Her father finished college and became an agricultural engineer, while her mother started a childcare service to help support her family. When her dad secured a job, they immigrated to Bergenfield, New Jersey, beginning their new chapter living out of a hotel while they searched for a home of their own.</p><p>From a young age, Fatima was always running toward something bigger than herself. Throughout her time as a student, she was consistently top of her class, excelling in science as well as in sports, and becoming a state champion in cross country. At Harbor Teacher Prep Academy, she worked as a cross country Coach, earning the nickname “Coach Z” from her students and leading her teams to their first championships. While working full time, she earned her teaching credential at CSU Dominguez Hills and started her career at a school in South Los Angeles.</p><h5>Education and Inspiring the Next Generation</h5><p>As a teacher in Watts, Fatima lived the realities of underfunded schools, overcrowded classrooms, and educators stretched thin without the pay, resources, or respect they deserved. She worked to help students who didn’t know where their next meal was coming from and with with too many students who were in foster care, unhoused, or working while going to school. She taught in classrooms with kids having to share outdated supplies, families worried about the water their children were drinking, and teachers who stretched themselves thin to manage classes that were far too overcrowded. As a mother to a son with special needs, she also navigated the challenges families face when our schools don’t have the resources to provide support and services for every child.</p><p>Watching her students struggle to overcome these disadvantages every day motivated Fatima to devote her free time to fixing our local schools and building healthier and more livable communities for students and families. She co-founded and still leads a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) youth nonprofit, TeraWatts Initiative, to introduce students to new career pathways and participate in regional competitions. In the summer, TeraWatts also runs a free camp for children and partners with local organizations and community gardens.</p>

<h2>Join Us at a Campaign Launch</h2>

<p>Fatima also served on the community leadership council for Watts Rising, a community-powered partnership bringing neighbors, local organizations, and public agencies together to make Watts healthier and more affordable. On the council, she helped implement a $32 million Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) grant for the community, delivering real, tangible investments in Watts. They both bonded over their love of science and a passion for helping young people. In her free time, Fatima likes to spend time with her family, help out her Robotics team in Watts, go on runs and to her local gym in Carson, spend time outdoors, as well as keep up with her favorite shows.</p>
