She&nbsp;is the chair of the California Democratic Party’s Progressive Caucus, leading the largest state Democratic caucus in the nation. In this role, she has had many achievements, such as co-writing the state's reparations resolution and bringing together delegates of all faiths to pass a ceasefire resolution.She leads a youth nonprofit STEAM leader at TeraWatts Initiative, which was founded to ensure equity in education for first-generation black and brown students to have access to STEAM careers. The nonprofit also runs a free annual STEAM summer camp for young children each summer and has formed numerous collaborations with local organizations and community gardens.Living in South Los Angeles, Fatima&nbsp;brings with her lived experiences as a former California Teachers Association member and community organizer. Her activism stems from her work as a high school science teacher in Watts at a school that has dealt with the effects of polluted water and land. Fatima Iqbal-Zubair is an educator, a mom to a son with special needs, and someone who’s never stopped showing up for working families. She knows the struggle—the bills that pile up, the worry that keeps you up at night—and she’s ready to be our voice in the State Assembly.

As an immigrant, educator, and mother to a son with special needs, Fatima understands the challenges our communities face.</h3>When she was just seven years old, as the Gulf War was beginning, Fatima’s family made the difficult decision to move to a new country and leave everything behind in search of stability and opportunity. Her father finished college and became an agricultural engineer, while her mother started a childcare service to help support her family. When her dad secured a job, they immigrated to Bergenfield, New Jersey, beginning their new chapter living out of a hotel while they searched for a home of their own.From a young age, Fatima was always running toward something bigger than herself. Throughout her time as a student, she was consistently top of her class, excelling in science as well as in sports, and becoming a state champion in cross country. At Harbor Teacher Prep Academy, she worked as a cross country Coach, earning the nickname “Coach Z” from her students and leading her teams to their first championships. While working full time, she earned her teaching credential and started her career at a school in South Los Angeles.<h4>Education and Inspiring the Next Generation</h4>As a teacher in Watts, Fatima lived the realities of underfunded schools, overcrowded classrooms, and educators stretched thin without the pay, resources, or respect they deserved. She worked to help students who didn’t know where their next meal was coming from and with with too many students who were in foster care, unhoused, or working while going to school. She taught in classrooms with kids having to share outdated supplies, families worried about the water their children were drinking, and teachers who stretched themselves thin to manage classes that were far too overcrowded. As a mother to a son with special needs, she also navigated the challenges families face when our schools don’t have the resources to provide support and services for every child.Watching her students struggle to overcome these disadvantages every day motivated Fatima to devote her free time to fixing our local schools and building healthier and more livable communities for students and families. She co-founded and still leads a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) youth nonprofit, TeraWatts Initiative, to introduce students to new career pathways and participate in regional competitions. In the summer, TeraWatts also runs a free camp for children and partners with local organizations and community gardens.

Fatima also served on the community leadership council for Watts Rising, a community-powered partnership bringing neighbors, local organizations, and public agencies together to make Watts healthier and more affordable. On the council, she helped implement a $32 million Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) grant for the community, delivering real, tangible investments in Watts. <h4>As a high school science teacher, co-founder and mentor of a youth robotics team, and mother to a school-aged son with special needs, I’ve seen first-hand how much safe, high-quality schools improve our communities and the futures of our children and how resources like after-school programs keep students safe and thriving.</h4>When our children were missing these opportunities, I created them. I co-founded a youth nonprofit called TeraWatts Initiative dedicated to ensuring quality education for students pursuing careers in science, technology, and the arts. My husband and I also provide scholarships to two seniors who graduate from Terawatts to help the dream of a college education be realized. Amidst federal ICE raids, I patrolled my local elementary school with teachers at 186th Elementary to support students and teachers to make sure they felt safe and supported on their first day of school.I founded a <a href="https://www.firstlegoleague.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">FIRST Lego STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) League</a> afterschool program in Carson to help students when they were left without support. Whether connecting kids to hands-on learning, or providing SAT/ACT exam tutoring, I made sure our students had access to the tools, mentorship, and confidence they needed to be prepared to go to college or career training programs and start successful careers.Our children and our educators can’t wait any longer for action. I’ll fight to protect public education and the increased investments our schools need to provide the education our children deserve. As a New Teacher Mentor and Science Department Chair at the Jordan High School complex, I advocated for my fellow teachers to ensure they were given the resources they needed to support our students.&nbsp;As your Assemblymember, I will work to ensure every student has access to high-quality education by:<ul><li>Ensuring teachers and staff are paid fairly.</li><li>Fully funding public education from early childhood through higher education so every student has the resources they need to succeed.</li><li>Closing corporate property tax loopholes to generate stable funding for our schools and communities.</li><li>Opposing privatization and outsourcing of student and staff support services to keep these programs accountable to the public and the communities they serve.</li><li>Strengthening recruitment and retention programs, especially for faculty of color and first-generation educators.</li><li>Expanding financial aid, tuition relief, and student support services so higher education is accessible to low-income and working-class students.</li><li>Investing in mentorship, academic support, and pathway programs that support students of color from K–12 through college and careers.</li></ul>

Fighting For Quality Education for Every Student 

<h4>No one should have to choose between paying rent and seeing a doctor. Health care is too expensive, too complicated, and leaves too many people behind. We need to lower costs, cut waste and make accessing health care simple and reliable.&nbsp;</h4>I will fight to protect and expand Medi-Cal health care coverage. We cannot allow budget cuts or federal rollbacks to strip coverage from seniors, children, working families, or immigrants. Quality care for patients starts with making sure the people providing care are respected and supported. Nurses, residents, therapists, technicians, and support staff deserve fair wages, strong benefits, secure pensions, and the right to join a union.As your Assemblymember, I will work to make health care more accessible and affordable by:<ul><li>Protecting and expanding Medi-Cal coverage.</li><li>Guaranteeing comprehensive coverage — including safe and equitable reproductive and gender-affirming care —for all Californians.</li><li>Eliminating premiums, copays, deductibles, and surprise medical bills.</li><li>Expanding access to mental and behavioral health care and ensuring providers are adequately funded and available in underserved communities.</li><li>Lowering prescription drug costs and eliminating the profit-driven middlemen that increase prices for patients.</li><li>Supporting increased funding for teaching hospitals in Los Angeles County for resident doctors.</li><li>Investing in community clinics and safety-net providers and supporting the health care workers who serve our communities with fair wages, safe staffing levels, and strong labor protections.</li><li>Strengthening state oversight of insurance companies and empowering regulators to monitor compliance, reduce wrongful denials, and hold corporations accountable.</li><li>Creating incentives for healthcare professionals — especially those that are historically underrepresented — to live and work in the communities that are most left behind.</li></ul>

<h4>Good jobs are the backbone of a strong community. When I taught high school in Watts, the California Teachers Union stood with me when I fought for better resources for my students. I support stronger penalties for union-busting, fewer barriers to organizing, and information campaigns so workers understand their rights.&nbsp;We need an economy where local businesses can grow and succeed. I will protect small, and worker-owned businesses from being pushed out of our community or buried in red tape. I support tax credits and state incentives for companies that treat workers fairly — if a business invests in its workers and our community, our state should invest in them.&nbsp;As your Assemblymember, I will work to bring and keep good jobs in our community by:<ul><li>Protecting and strengthening workers’ right to organize by defending collective bargaining, opposing outsourcing and union-busting tactics, and regulating corporate efforts to integrate AI and automation technologies that leave workers behind.</li><li>Advancing strong, state-level protections like a California PRO Act to ensure workers can join unions, negotiate fair contracts, and secure safe, dignified workplaces.</li><li>Expanding access to state grants, low-interest loans, and technical support for small, local businesses while ensuring funding prioritizes neighborhood businesses over large corporations.</li><li>Reducing barriers for small businesses by supporting affordable commercial rents, prioritizing small businesses in public contracts, investing in underserved business corridors, and simplifying regulations with clear guidance and support instead of fines and red tape.</li></ul>
